Pearl Shinn Wormhoudt (1915–2015) was an American singer, voice teacher, and author with a particular interest in the psychology of singing. Throughout her career, she explored how an understanding of the voice could help singers become more confident and expressive performers. Her experience in visual art, drama, and dance also shaped her teaching, giving her a broad perspective on creativity and the challenges of performing (Xlibris, n.d.).

Born on October 27, 1915, in Knoxville, Iowa, Wormhoudt earned a Bachelor of Arts from Central College and a Master of Arts from Columbia University, supported by a grant from the Schepp Foundation. In New York, she studied singing with Douglas Stanley and later Paola Novikova. Before her college teaching career, she directed girls’ activities at Chicago’s Garibaldi Institute and worked with church and community organizations in New York (“Pearl Wormhoudt,” 2015; William Penn University, 2014).

In 1958, Wormhoudt joined William Penn College in Oskaloosa, Iowa, where she served as Associate Professor of Fine Arts until 1981. She received emerita status that year and returned to teach as an adjunct from 1985 into the early 1990s. Although voice and vocal pedagogy were her main subjects, her work at the college also included teaching ceramics, directing drama, and choreographing musical theatre. She remained active as a singer, giving annual faculty recitals with pianist Linda Macy Eliason (“Pearl Wormhoudt,” 2015; William Penn University, 2014).

Her first book, Building the Voice as an Instrument: With a Studio Reference Handbook for Singing Teachers and Singers (1981), addressed a practical concern for teachers: how to apply knowledge of vocal function in a singing lesson. It moved from explanations of the vocal systems to planning lessons and choosing exercises for specific technical goals. Wormhoudt encouraged teachers to give students clear, constructive directions, helping them understand what to do rather than dwelling on what was going wrong (Velarde, 2013, pp. 14–15).

In With a Song in My Psyche: On the Psychology of Singing and Teaching Singing (2002), she turned more closely to the singer’s experience of learning and performing. The book explored motivation, memory, self-image, perfectionism, and performance anxiety, alongside musical development in childhood and adolescence. These subjects reflected her interest in how a singer’s thoughts, feelings, and experiences influence both vocal development and artistic expression (Xlibris, n.d.).

Wormhoudt also helped bring teachers together beyond her own studio. She served as program chair for the first International Congress of Voice Teachers, held in Strasbourg, France, in 1987. She was an honorary life member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing and a member of the American Academy of Teachers of Singing (National Association of Teachers of Singing, n.d.; “Pearl Wormhoudt,” 2015).

In 1996, William Penn honored Pearl and her husband, Arthur, with its Distinguished Service Award. Through her teaching and books, she offered fellow teachers practical ways to approach both vocal technique and the personal challenges singers face. Wormhoudt died in Ottumwa, Iowa, on February 4, 2015, aged 99 (“Pearl Wormhoudt,” 2015; William Penn University, n.d.).
